Glossary

bodyboarding: Bodyboarding is a derivative of wave riding. The average board consists of a small, rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam. The board can be shaped and adapted to different riding styles, and size of rider.
stringers: Some boards contain one or two rods (usually of carbon or graphite) called stringers to strengthen the board, reduce deformation, and add stiffness and recoil to the core, giving greater speed from bottom turns.
channels: Channels are grooves that increase surface area in the critical parts of the board which, in turn, allow it to have greater wave hold and control.
skegs: Skegs are small fins added to the bottom of a Bodyboard or Surfboard used to decrease slippage on a wave face.
slick bottom: A thick plastic bottom (usually Surlyn) is glued, or more recently, bonded via a hot air lamination technique. This slick bottom gives the board strength and speed.
leash: A leash is a cord used between rider and board to get your board back after wiping out. A leash can be coiled or straight and can attach to arm or leg.
skimboarding: Skimboarding (or skimming) is a boardsport in which a board is used to ride shallow beaches on the water's edge. Riders run and throw a glassed plywood disc before hopping on for a ride.
footbag: A footbag is a small and round bag or sack used in sports which are also referred to generically as hackee sacks. (A Hacky Sack® is the trademarked name of a specific type of footbag).
crescent tail: Bodyboard with a "U" Shaped tail similar to a crescent moon. The crescent tail helps hold the rider to the board while of the wave.
bat tail: Bodyboard with a tail shape similar to the wingspan of a bat. The tail has points on the end edges with a wider, rounded piece in the center. Also called 'wing' tails, these boards give a lot of manueverability in the wave.
rails: A tail of a bodyboard referes to the outside edge of the bodyboard. Often the rail of a bodyboard is expressed as a ratio such as 50/50 or 60/40, etc. The theory is that a 50/50 rail is faster but a 60/40 offers more control.
